Day of Grandpa Loren's Birth

March 31, 2010

As I mentioned in the first post, Grandpa Loren was born on July 26, 1916 in Iowa (where he would live the majority of his life). He was born with a twin brother named Warren and the delivery period was anything but smooth. It is uncertain as to what the complications were but I do believe it was not so uncommon a thing to have miscarriages in those days, especially involving twins. The knowledge and technology we have today is light-years ahead of what they were working with back then.
It was a warm summer’s day on the farm. The family and neighbors had all gathered in the house to assist in the delivery. My Great Grandmother Carrie May was struggling. It could have been due to the stress of the two babies fighting to get out of her petite, 4’10” frame. Maybe it was the unbearable heat she was feeling in her un-air-conditioned farmhouse. Regardless of her undesirable conditions, she hung in there like a soldier. Unfortunately, Warren did not survive the delivery but thankfully my grandpa did!

Grandpa Loren came out of his mother’s womb alive, but barely. It wasn’t until next-door neighbor Annie Flint thought to give him a nip of her whiskey that he started breathing. I just came to find out that Grandpa’s middle initial “A” was what his parents decided on to honor Annie Flint for saving his life. What a remarkable story!

Grandpa Loren (Blog 1)

March 22, 2010

Okay, so since I’ve decided to tell the story of my grandfather, I thought it’d be a good idea to give a little background information on the man himself.  The following are facts and figures I pulled from my dad via email so it’s nothing specific.

Loren A Cunningham was born to Adolphus and Carrie May Cunningham on July 26, 1916 (yes, I said 1916) in Des Moines, Iowa.  He was the youngest of seven children and believe it or not, his oldest sister Vera was actually born in the 1800’s!  Its hard to fathom as I sit here in the year twenty-ten that I have a great aunt who was born two centuries ago.  His older brother Kenneth, who was born in 1907, was the man my father was named after who, therefore, I am named after.

Something else I found very interesting was the fact that the “A” in my grandfather’s name was the extent of his middle name.  His parents didn’t give him a full middle name, just the letter “A.”

Grandpa Loren married my grandmother, Darlyne Luhman, in Glendale, California on May 16, 1942.  Unfortunately, I never met my grandmother because she died of cancer very shortly before I was born.  I have always wondered what she was like but now that I think about it, I’ve never really asked much about her.  I hope this project allows me to do so.

Grandpa Loren died on march 3, 2002 in our home in Alexandria, Virginia.  I remember the day like it was yesterday.  It was a very eventful day in the history of my life but I believe the story will serve best for the final post.

Digital Story Proposal

March 4, 2010

I have come to the conclusion that there is a lot about my late grandfather I’ve never known. He died in 2003 at the age of eighty-six. Since I was only thirteen when he died, he experienced the majority of his life before I ever existed. Sure, I’ve heard stories; like how he used to be a professional singer on the radio or how he used to ride horses with Ronald Reagan. But I don’t know how or why any of those things ever happened. I’m learning the story of my grandfather not for a grade, but for my own personal fulfillment. I hope doing this will bring me closer to the man that I barely knew; the legend that is my grandpa: Loren Cunningham.
